The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA)
is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States,
with a vast network of fixed route services including bus,
subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail
serving a 2,200 square mile service region.
We are seeking candidates for the position of Rail Vehicle
Electronic Technician (0843) in our City Transit Division (CTD)
OVERALL DESCRIPTION
Maintains, troubleshoots, calibrates and repairs all rail vehicle
electronic printed circuit boards and subsystems assigned to the
Woodland Electronic Repair Shop. As an experienced specialist,
provides technical support to all rail locations and assists
SEPTA's engineering department with electrical/electronic
projects.
Compensation Data
$38.40/ hr. Increase to $42.67/hr. after one year
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILTIES
- Maintaining, troubleshooting, calibrating and repairing all
rail vehicle electronic printed circuit boards and subsystems
assigned to the Woodland Electronic Repair Shop and to provide
technical support to all rail locations and to assist SEPTA's
engineering department with electrical/electronic projects.
- Troubleshoots, repairs and calibrates analog, digital and
micro-processor controlled printed circuit boards down to component
level for the type of Rail Vehicle and equipment assigned.
- Interprets electrical, electronic and mechanical
schematics.
- Removes and inserts semiconductor devices including
through-hole and surface mount devices using soldering/de-soldering
equipment.
- Conducts diagnostic test using equipment such as voltmeters,
ammeters, oscilloscopes, curve tracer, automatic test equipment,
programmable multifunction generators, high voltage power supplies,
frequency counters, chart recorders, current probes, EPROM
programming systems, high potential tester, megohmmeters and
computers
- Performs diagnostic tests on rail vehicles with portable and
on-board test equipment as required.
- Operates computer-controlled Automated Test Equipment (ATE) to
test and troubleshoot printed circuit boards.
- Interprets and edits test software for Automated Test Equipment
(ATE).
- Repairs open conductors on multi layered printed circuit
boards.
- Repairs damaged conductors, edge connectors, and plated holes
using circuit repair kits.
- Tests and repairs high power semiconductor modules.
- Performs failure analysis on printed circuit boards and makes
recommendations to increase their reliability.
- Writes procedures to test and calibrate printed circuit boards
as well as on-board vehicle system/system faults with the
assistance/approval of the Engineering Department.
- Designs and fabricate diagnostic test equipment for printed
circuit boards
- Performs acceptance inspection on new printed circuit board
test equipment.
- Maintains and repairs automatic test equipment, test fixtures,
power supplies, meters and other test equipment.
- Assists Operation's Managers, Engineering Department and vendor
representatives with the installation, development, commissioning
and troubleshooting of new as well as existing rail equipment
including operational testing on test tracks or Rail Vehicle
routes.
- Inspects, repairs, and calibrates the LRV power brake vital
safety relay.
- Provides technical support for rail vehicle
electrical/electronic equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and
security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job
safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises
or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other
employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to
promote the safety of others.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent with 2 years of electronic
technical school, associate degree in electronics or military
electronics-technical training.
- Must possess valid driver's license.
- Special Knowledge and Training. Handling of static sensitive
devices, ability to interpret electrical, electronic, software and
mechanical schematics; use of soldering and de-soldering equipment;
use of complex electronic measuring instruments; ability to
troubleshoot and repair a variety of rail vehicle propulsion
systems; use of computer software to diagnose and repair rail
vehicles; ability to use stereo microscopes; use of IEEE graphic
symbols for logic functions; quality control standards.
- Must pass written test and performance testing as
required.
- Must have good hand and eye dexterity to work with extremely
small electronic components.
- Must satisfactorily complete performance test as required by
labor agreement.
- Working Conditions: Rail Vehicle Electronic Technicians work
primarily in the electronic repair shop and occasionally at other
rail vehicle locations.
