Job Overview:

The Career Services Advisor will carry out the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the department. This Advisor provides career education and support for students' and graduates' career planning strategies and career development needs in the following areas: career readiness, including but not limited to resume writing, interviewing, workplace professionalism, industry expectations, and employment within the gem and jewelry industry. Preparing students for finding suitable employment by enhancing their job search skills. Developing and fostering relationships with the Gem and Jewelry employer community to provide students with opportunities through direct contact and virtual communication methods. Maintaining and updating student records and Career Services documentation and technology sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Career Coaching

  • Meet with students and alumni individually to assess their career readiness to effectively launch and manage a job search or career advancement process.
  • Provide ongoing coaching individually and in groups to ensure that students are effectively prepared for company interactions including interviews, site visits, networking events, job fairs, and corporate information sessions and are on track to achieve their career goals.
  • Answer career and general questions from current students, alumni, and prospective students via telephone, letter, facsimile, email and/or in person.
  • Guide students and alumni with regard to the construction and/or updating of resumes and other career correspondence such as cover letters, reference pages, thank you notes, etc.
  • Provide effective interview tips, tools, and techniques and assists with mock interview sessions.
  • Assist with the development of job search strategies and career plans based on current vocational program and career preferences.
  • Offer tips, tools, and techniques about how to research potential companies and open job opportunities within desired career path and geographic location. Program Management
    • Develop and deliver job search and career management workshops, interactive forums, and seminars through in-class and/or online or webinar formats.
    • Oversee the content and production of the career management and other resource materials and guides that support the career management process and the career coaching programs
    • Identify, purchase and/or develop materials and resources for use in training/coaching activities and for inclusion in the career resource library.
    • Assist in creating and editing marketing materials, brochures, and other resource materials for Career Services and external stakeholders.
    • Develop targeted e-communication pieces to students on career- and services-related topics.
    • Represent Career Services in various GIA events.
    • Support Student Services department with event functions and student activities such as orientation, graduation, Halloween, etc. Employer Relations
      • Manage and expand relationships with existing recruiters and company representatives, and garner ongoing involvement and support for career opportunities and educational programming.
      • Conduct ongoing research and analysis of the gem and jewelry employment market to provide expertise to current students, alumni, and prospective students.
      • Interact with potential employers to determine the best strategy for presenting their job opportunities to the ideal job seekers.
      • Identify and actively participate in conferences and professional association meetings and events.
      • Provide input to develop marketing materials and marketing plans to support targeted outreach efforts.
      • Responsible for logistics for industry events held on campus including but not limited to alumni meetings, WJA mentoring sessions, graduations, guest speakers, etc.
      • Maintain the online CSM portal job/internship database. Career Services Events
        • For the Carlsbad, New York, and London hiring events - Collaborate with Events, Marketing, Public Relations, and Accounting departments for recruiter registration, logistics needs, verification of individual attendees per recruiting company, and payment authorization for all fees associated with recruiter registrations.
        • Responsible for recruiter registrations and outreach efforts.
        • Assist with recruiter participation, set up, and clean up the day of the career fair.
        • Responds quickly and efficiently to recruiters' needs.
        • Accountable for the production, distribution, coordination, and collection of recruiter surveys the day of each hiring events.
        • Administrative/Employment Tracking
        • Maintain updated records of meetings with students and alumni, their career advancement activities, and eventual employment changes.
        • Maintain updated records of meetings and interactions with company representatives.
        • Manage expense reimbursements on a timely basis.
        • Maintain and update all instructional materials and guides on a timely basis.
        • Maintain student employment database on a monthly basis, in coordination with graduation dates, and for both on-going and on-demand requests, follow up with recent graduates to determine their employment status and job details.
        • Surveys resident classes for employment status; responsible for compilation, distribution, and collection of Employment Survey packets.
        • Data mining and data entry of student/alumni employment status based on email communications, internet and social media content and other forms of virtual communications.
        • Maintain accuracy of employment database to provide up-to-date information required by the Education Accreditation & Compliance department for accrediting and licensing requirements.
        • Assist with the coordination and logistics for the Guest Speakers in the Student Lecture Series.
        • Deploying Satisfaction Surveys to GIA students.
        • Other duties as assigned TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
          • AJP required or willingness to obtain upon hire.
          • Thorough knowledge of other GIA courses or willingness to obtain.
          • Thorough knowledge of gem and jewelry industry or willingness to obtain.
          • Strong computer skills with expertise in other relevant software applications (Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.).
          • Flexible, self-motivated, team-oriented, and solution-oriented to effectively deal with a variety of people and situations.
          • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
          • Proven customer service orientation and follow-up to ensure customer satisfaction.
          • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
          • Strong organizational skills.
          • Career Services/Counseling experience preferred.
          • Knowledge of Accreditation and Employment Tracking practices as related to vocational programs preferred.
          • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of personalities to establish and maintain effective working relationships. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
            • High School Diploma and 5-6+ years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree preferred. 2-3 years Jewelry industry experience required.
            • Talent acquisition experience a plus.
            • GIA education preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

              Physical Demands
              • Work is performed in a designated professional office workstation and environment.
              • Extensive use of office equipment to include computer, calculator, copier, fax, and other business related machines and software.
              • This position is located in New York, NY reporting fully on-site due to the nature of the job. Pay Range: $24-36/hour.
